We should be able to digest the majority of food and drinks that pass through our lips. However, changes in food processing methods and unhelpful lifestyles sometimes means that our stomachs don’t always react well to everything we eat.
Whilst our taste buds can appreciate some foods, our stomach can be less happy about the meal and can result in gas, poor digestion and bloating.
And there’s nothing worse than painful bloating and gas which leaves us feeling uneasy and heavy
Fortunately, there are many foods that can ease our digestion to keep things running smoothly.
Lime: Lime is very well-known natural remedy for flus and colds, but it also works wonders for digestion. The natural acidity in limes helps to break down food and stimulate the digestive system. In fact, using limes and lemons is seen to be such an important digestive aid that most people in India have lime pickle as a standard addition to their meals aside from salt and pepper.
Aloe Vera: The chances are, you have probably rubbed some aloe vera onto your skin to relieve a rash or a burn. Other than aloe being skin friendly, it is also stomach friendly. Like limes, it helps to break food down by stimulating mucus release. The gel in the plant increases intestinal water content when consumed. All this extra liquid helps the body to easily move that food through the intestines. Fresh aloe can be found in your local Asian or Caribbean produce store.
Warm Water: Most of us know that drinking water is essential to our wellbeing. However, most of us tend to solely drink it room temperature or ice cold. The heat from the water has a calming effect on the body, helping abdominal muscles relax and stimulate digestion.
Fennel seeds: Another common practice in India is chewing spices like fennel seeds post lunch or dinner. Fennel seeds and fennel are actually recommended to people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and it is effective in relieving gas and bloating due to it’s natural oils.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple Cider Vinegar has a plethora of uses from household cleaning, to skin toning, to aiding in digestion. It makes a good digestion tonic as it increases stomach acid, helping food to be broken down both comfortably and effectively.
